ROCKWALL REAL ESTATE

Rockwall County is the smallest county in Texas, covering only 147 square miles. It is a very popular place to find a home when searching for Dallas homes or homes for sale in Dallas because it is only 20-25 minutes down Interstate 30 to downtown Dallas.  It also lies on one of the largest and most popular lakes in the Dallas Metroplex. Many people looking for a home in the Dallas Metroplex forget about this community just northeast of Dallas because so much of the recent growth has been almost straight north.  It is therefore one of the best places to consider homes at any price, from low priced subdivisions homes to high priced custom homes.  A search for Dallas homes within a 30 minute drive to downtown Dallas is becoming more and more scarce, but is still available in Rockwall.

In the early 1800s the area was occupied by Caddo Indians. The Creek Indians began to arrive and as they spread, the two tribes were in conflict. When the first Anglo-Americans arrived sometime in the 1840s they found these Indian groups at war among themselves. The National Road of the Republic of Texas was surveyed and constructed in the mid-1840s through the area that would become Rockwall County. Running northeast from the Red River to Peters Colony, near the site of present day Dallas. the cities of Rockwall and Heath were founded along this road. The first post office in the area was known as Black Hill. It was transferred to the new village or Rockwall in 1855.

In the early 1850s farmers were digging a well and discovered a rock wall that crossed the county and at some places appeared above ground level. Scientists have determined that this is a natural formation, but folk tales continue to say that it was built by prehistoric natives. When the town of Rockwall was formed, it was named for the rock formation.

In 1836 the area was established as part of Nacogdoches County, and when Texas joined the Union in 1845, it was included in Henderson County. Kaufman County was formed in 1847, and the region now known as Rockwall County was placed in Kaufman County. Citizens thought the county seat of Kaufman was too inconvenient, and in 1873, Rockwall County was formed.

The last half of the twentieth century has brought about major changes in this once predominately agricultural area. Bounded on the west by Lake Ray Hubbard, it has become a very desirable residential area for the continuously growing Dallas Metropolitan area.
